Digital Photography: The Photographic Story

Do you have a story to tell? Join instructor and local photographer Mark Maziarz on an exploration of how to tell a story with photographs. In class, students discuss ideas, plan projects, shoot as a group and independently, and plan how to show our finished projects, whether the photographs will be displayed on a custom website, a printed book or mounted photographs for a gallery style display. Story projects can be as simple as the bird feeder outside your kitchen window to something as large scale as the life of immigrants in Park City. A basic understanding of how to take pictures is the only requirement. Any type of camera, including small point-and-shoots, are OK, but digital is advantageous so the class can review your photos with you. In class, the instructor won't be going over the technical details of photography, but will be happy to answer questions in one-on-one time. Be sure to allow time between class sessions to work on your project. Come to the first class with a list of ideas and be prepared to edit them and even pick new ones.

Winter Photography Hike

Join Park City Artist and Instructor, Mark Maziarz, as he takes class on a hike around Park City to photograph its beautiful winter landscape. Hike locations will be planned when the class meets in the morning, based on class input. Options include hikes to abandoned mine buildings, large stands of aspen and/or conifers, overviews of Park City, ski resort lodges, Old Town walks, etc. Learn some of the hidden locations and tips of the photography trade as we spend time in the outdoor beauty of Park City. There will be both group discussion and one on one time. We will hike on established trails so that snowshoes aren't needed, but boots will be needed in case of loose snow. Please bring appropriate clothing, sunblock, water and a light snack.

Merging Art & Commerce

An advertising and editorial photography workshop in Park City with award-winning photographer Mark Maziarz.

This weekend workshop will allow emerging professional photographers to discover how to make more money from their photos and better understand the business side of advertising and magazine photography. Many of us love creating images; we've invested in terrific gear, learned the basics (and perhaps far more than the basics), and are now finding that the response to our photos has grown increasingly positive. But how does one make the leap from dedicated hobbyist to legit professional photographer? Is it possible to make real money from stock or assignment photography? Mark will help photographers navigate the economic/legal/business side of the photographic art, discussing everything from website development to which elements of a shoot are tax write-offs to the ins-and-outs of creating a photo calendar and notecards to sell in your region. Practical application sessions will alternate with Q&As to create a weekend full of answers and ideas. Mark's casual demeanor, along with his extensive knowledge and experience, creates an atmosphere where no question feels too silly to ask, yet no topic too advanced to broach. You will leave with a better understanding of your photos, the art and business of photography, and the next steps in your journey toward a more fulfilling and profitable photographic career.

Space is limited to 6 participants. (Minimum of 3 participants.)
Workshop takes place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, the first weekend of every month.
Workshop fee: $395.
Summer/fall workshop with luxury lodging in Old Town Park City: $995. (2 nights lodging, when available)

Bring your camera, laptop (if you're a digital photographer), twenty of your most intriguing and exciting images, and questions.
Breaks will be provided for lunch.
